    New discussion topic.

Post by Sheepy on Tue Dec 08, 2015 9:57 am

So I got sudden nostalgia for this, I have no idea if anyone's even still looking but I felt like making this topic.

I'm 17 now, high school officially finished 5 days ago for me and I'm basically looking at 3 months of not achieving very much before I move away for uni next year. Mostly gonna be doing business-related stuff, which I wouldn't have expected from me 5 years ago. I've changed so much since then, and this forum is a brutal reminder of what an idiot I was even though, as I mentioned, it's really nostalgic. I kinda wish I'd been able to appreciate the 2000s more, even if they were probably objectively a bit crap.

So how about you all, anything changed since people briefly reappeared earlier in the year?

Just turned 18 ten days ago.

I finished the UK's version of high school (which we call secondary school) mid last year with some decent, if not meaningless, GCSE results. I've now been at sixth form college since Sept last year studying for my A-Levels in Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths.

Hopefully off to Uni next September to study Physics, sent off my applications to five fine establishments to enroll at. Just a game of waiting for my interviews (which I have two) and hearing back from the other three.

That's pretty much my recent life so far.

I believe you still have my Skype, so hit me up if and whenever you feel like. And by that I mean within reasonable hours of my timezone. And by reasonable hours I mean weekends between 4pm to 4am.

Hah, now you get to laugh at old you as well. Why the change of heart?
Physics was my least-hated science but I still dropped it before my last year.

Tertiary applications seem like a nightmare pretty much everywhere except here. All we have to do here is be in the top 30% or so of exam candidates and you can go anywhere, with the exception of engineering, some pre-med and some other specialised professional courses, no interview or personal statement or anything. Guaranteed entry if you get a certain grade, which is pretty low.
Granted we don't have any amazing universities but still, it's nice not having to deal with it, and I'm not paying $30,000-$100,000 a year to go overseas.

Haha, I don't recall saying that, but good question. I believe it may have been my fuckwit of a teacher, but maybe also since I don't take Biology seriously as a science, and Chemistry bores my nut out. Physics at GCSE level was very basic stuff (in comparison to undergrad level), so maybe my 'natural curiosity' inspired me. That's what my personal statement said anyway.

And that is pretty brilliant, wish it was that easy here. Some Uni's have insanely high grade expectations, especially for Physics, and that's not even including Oxford or Cambridge. The thing is, in recent years, there's been a big push University to become more accessible to people who aren't as intellectually gifted, which in my opinion is pure bollocks. It means more 'joke' courses (such as Surf Science, Golf Course Management and Parapsychology) which narrows down numbers for real subjects. Not to mention the overcrowding issue.

The difference in standard of Unis here is very polarising.

    Fair enough.

Interesting. I'd say all the universities have avoided joke courses for the most part. It's generally the technical institutes and some other mildly dodgy tertiary providers that offer weird courses.

I'd say all the universities (all 8 of them!) teach essentially the same content, with some having minor strengths in some areas and weaknesses in others. I reckon they're all fine, but nothing to make the world go wow.

It's a shame really, people get put off Universities here because of reputation or name. Just having the work 'Metropolitan' gives off a vibe of being a 'shit hole'.

My mum did Biology and Uni and was always disappointed that I never had the same interest. Is there a specific part of biology that you're studying or is it very broad? I don't know very much about it unfortunately. Learning about the organs of plants ruined it for me.
