Six years of my life I'll never get back; although, I would suspect the majority of those years the forum has been effectively dead.

    With great embarrassment and pain.

Which I already do now, to an extent.

Also the speed of replies impresses me.

Surely we've ignored this for longer than that. D:

I'm not sure if it means someone logging in or a post. I can see myself checking this out in 30 years time, that is unless our modern free spoken society has descended into a 1984-esque, totalitarian, big brother world.

Funnily enough I read that post while I was procrastinating regarding writing an English essay on 1984.

Never read it unfortunately; my English essays used to consist of Shakespeare and Of Mice and Men. Nineteen Eighty-Four seems more interesting.

Nineteen Eighty Four is an interesting book to read but studying it will put you off it, I nearly guarantee.

I wrote a essay comparing Atwood's Oryx and Crake to Orwell's 1984, both were wonderful books.

Heres my introduction that includes my thesis:

The Influence of Totalitarianism and Capitalism in the Societies depicted in Oryx and Crake and 1984
Throughout the course of history, humans have strived to create an ideal society. In the process, they have created government systems which exert control over the masses. However, this type of government sometimes works to the detriment of the people. In 1984, by George Orwell and Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood, dystopian societies are represented, through the exploration of totalitarian and capitalist societies. 1984s totalitarian government limits the freedoms of Oceania by monitoring society through surveillance systems, while the capitalist government depicted in Oryx and Crake allows for many freedoms familiar in Western culture, but are discreetly monitoring society with surveillance systems as well. The language system in 1984, Newspeak, has broken down to the extent that the only words left are words that cannot describe or indicate opposition towards the government. Conversely, the language in Oryx and Crake offers the only chance to keep in touch with humanity. Sexuality plays a major role in the totalitarian government system in 1984 because sex is meant for procreation and not pleasure. On the other hand, sex is a valuable commodity in Oryx and Crake. Lastly, the governments in 1984 and Oryx and Crake distort reality for society by using propaganda and forms of mass media to show that everyone will be happy if the rules are followed. Although 1984 and Oryx and Crake are dystopian novels based on the corruption of power and hegemonic principles, the society in 1984 is organized according to a totalitarian government system, while corporations in Oryx and Crake achieve power through the use of capitalist greed and biotechnology.
